Climate change projections show North Canterbury is likely to experience fewer frosts inland and a longer growing season, providing opportunities for different agricultural land uses.

It will also be drier, with greater chance of drought, and a number of hill country rivers and streams will experience greater uncertainty in flow rates depending on seasonal rainfall patterns.

By 2090, winter rainfall is projected to decrease by up to 10 per cent in the likes of Hanmer Springs. It will also be windier across the plains, with projected increases in wind speed of between 5-10 per cent above the 1986-2005 norm.
